Broad Peak, originally referred to as K3, is the 12th highest mountain in the world, It forms part of the Gasherbrum massif and lies approximately 5 miles from K2. The name "Broad Peak" was adopted after it was found that the summit extended over a mile in length, making it distinct from the initially assigned name. Locally, it is known as Faichan Kangri.
It was first successfully climbed on June 9, 1957, by an Austrian team led by Marcus Schmuck, which included Fritz Wintersteller, Kurt Diemberger, and Hermann Buhl. Their initial attempt on May 29 saw Wintersteller and Diemberger reach the forepeak at 8,030 meters. Remarkably, they achieved this ascent without supplemental oxygen, high-altitude porters, or support from a base camp.
