The Spantik Peak Expedition with Arando Adventure provides a unique opportunity to climb above 7,000 meters in the spectacular Karakoram range, where we know every detail about the area because Spantik is part of our home in Arando. Our expedition follows the southeast ridge of Spantik Peak, starting from the picturesque Shigar Valley. At an impressive altitude of 7,027 meters, Spantik Peak is situated in a less-traveled region, away from the typical trekking and expedition routes of the Karakoram.
This climb is perfect for mountaineers who have experience with significant treks in the Karakoram or Himalayas, or those who have summited a 6,000-meter peak. The Spantik Expedition is essential for climbers aspiring to tackle higher peaks, serving as an ideal precursor to 8,000-meter climbs. Known as a training ground for high-altitude adventurers, Spantik offers a relatively low-difficulty climbing approach, making it an excellent introduction to the challenges of the Karakoram.
Not only is Spantik an exceptional peak for testing your skills above 7,000 meters, but it also immerses you in the breathtaking beauty of the Karakoram valleys, rich culture, and majestic mountains. Compared to other climbing expeditions, Spantik Peak is more accessible in terms of technical difficulty and is one of the more affordable options in the Karakoram range. The trek to base camp is equally rewarding, featuring stunning landscapes and vibrant local communities.

Once we're all set, we'll embark on an acclimatization hike to Kharpocho Fort, just a short walk from the Skardu bazaars. This historic fort offers breathtaking views of the Indus River, Skardu, and the surrounding landscape, making it a perfect spot to take in the beauty of the region.
Early in the morning, we’ll set off for Arando, the last village in the Shigar Valley before reaching Spantik Peak. The drive from Skardu to Arando takes about 5 to 7 hours, and after about half an hour, we’ll enter the Shigar Valley, home to K2, the world’s second-highest peak. As we travel through lush green fields alongside the Shigar River, the valley narrows, leading us deeper into the mountains along the scenic Basha River.
After approximately three hours, we’ll arrive at Chutron Village, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the local hot springs. Following a relaxing soak and lunch, we’ll continue our journey to Arando, which is just 2 to 3 hours away. Upon reaching Arando Village, our porters, climbing assistants, and kitchen crew will join us to prepare for the ascent of Spantik Peak. Our staff will set up the tents, and we’ll be welcomed with a hot cup of tea, cookies, and snacks. On the first day of the Spantik Peak Expedition, we’ll begin our trek from Arando Village along a lush, green trail that winds alongside the glacier. This scenic route takes us through vibrant pastures until we reach ChogoBrangsa, a summer pasture that translates to “Huge Lodge.”
The trek to ChogoBrangsa will take approximately 6 to 8 hours, covering a distance of around 14 kilometers with an altitude gain of 900 meters. Along the way, you'll have the opportunity to meet local shepherds and miners, enriching your experience as we make our way toward Spantik Peak.
On the second day of the Spantik Peak Expedition, we’ll set out early, trekking along the ridge of the glacier. Most of the journey will be on stable trails, though there are a few patches where we’ll need to traverse the glacier, being mindful of any stonefall risks. Our destination for the day is Balocho Camp.
The trek from ChogoBrangsa to Balocho will take approximately 5 to 7 hours, covering a distance of around 13 to 14 kilometers with an altitude gain of 700 meters. This day also offers participants their first breathtaking view of Spantik Peak from camp. We’ll spend the night at Balocho, resting up for the adventures that lie ahead.
On the third day of the Spantik Peak Expedition, we’ll reach our destination: the Spantik Base Camp. The entire trek today will be on the glacier as we make our way toward the peak. After 5 to 6 hours of trekking on the Chogolungma Glacier, we’ll arrive at base camp, gaining an altitude of 500 meters over a distance of approximately 13 to 14 kilometers.
During the acclimatization and climbing days of the Spantik Peak Expedition, your cooking and support staff will remain with you at base camp to ensure everything runs smoothly. Meanwhile, the rest of the porters and crew will trek back to Arando Village, completing their duties and allowing you to focus on your acclimatization and preparation for the ascent. This time is crucial for adjusting to the altitude and fine-tuning your climbing skills in the stunning surroundings of Spantik.
As the Spantik Peak Expedition comes to a close, the climbers, along with the Chogori Adventure staff and porters, will trek back to Balocho Camp for an overnight stay. After resting and reflecting on the journey, we'll resume our trek the following day, making our way back to Arando Village.
