Set off on an incredible 11-12 hour drive to Chilas, covering 461 kilometers along the legendary Karakoram Highway. This historic route connects the Gilgit-Baltistan region to the ancient Silk Road, stretching about 1,300 kilometers (810 miles) from Kashgar in China’s Xinjiang region to Abbottabad and Hassan Abdal in Pakistan. As you navigate this breathtaking highway, you'll encounter some of the world's most stunning landscapes, featuring towering peaks, deep valleys, and rugged terrains, all while immersing yourself in the rich history and vibrant cultural tapestry of this extraordinary corridor.
On Day 2, enjoy an enchanting drive from Chilas to Skardu, covering approximately 290 kilometers in about 8-10 hours. This scenic route winds through dramatic mountain landscapes and alongside the Indus River, providing breathtaking views of the Karakoram range. As you travel, you'll pass through charming villages, immersing yourself in the region's rugged beauty. Take a mid-day break for lunch at a local eatery before arriving in Skardu by late afternoon or early evening. After checking into your accommodation, indulge in a delightful dinner featuring traditional Balti cuisine, then unwind in preparation for the exciting adventures that await you.
In the morning, take a scenic 35-kilometer drive to Shigar Valley, where you’ll visit the historic Shigar Fort and explore the stunning landscapes of the valley, including the unique Katpana Desert, also known as the Cold Desert. In the afternoon, head to Satpara Lake to enjoy its serene beauty, followed by a 2-hour hike to Kharpocho Fort from Skardu city, where you can soak in panoramic views of the surrounding area.
Drive 100 km to Khaplu village, where you'll explore the historic Chaqchan Mosque, the imposing Khaplu Fort, and the charming village itself. In the evening, return to Skardu with a 100 km drive back.
Drive 240 km to Gilgit and enjoy lunch upon arrival. Afterward, explore Gilgit Bazaar and visit the Kargah Buddha. Continue your journey to Hunza Valley with a 100 km drive, making stops at scenic viewpoints along the way for photography and refreshments.
In the morning, explore the 700-year-old Baltit Fort and the surrounding Baltit village. After lunch, visit the 900-year-old Altit Fort and the nearby Altit village, including a stop at the women carpenters' project. In the evening, enjoy a scenic walk along the water channel from Karimabad towards Hyderabad village.
In the morning, embark on an excursion to Hopper Valley, where you can visit the impressive Hopper Glacier and explore the valley's stunning landscapes. In the afternoon, drive for approximately thirty minutes to Duiker Valley and check into your hotel. Duiker Valley offers breathtaking viewpoints for watching both the sunrise and sunset over the majestic mountains surrounding Hunza.
Drive 50 km to Passu, making several noteworthy stops along the way. Visit the stunning Attabad Lake, followed by Borith Lake. Explore Gulkin and Gulmit villages before admiring the Passu White Glacier and Passu village. Continue to Hussani village to see the Hussani Suspension Bridge. Conclude your journey with a 50 km drive to Sost.
Take an excursion to Khunjerab Pass, the border between Pakistan and China. In the evening, drive back to Karimabad, enjoying the scenic return journey.
Drive 235 km to Chilas, then continue your journey after lunch along the Karakoram Highway for another 200 km to Besham. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel for the night.
